Between Castellammare del Golfo and San Vito lo Capo is Scopello (from the Greek Scopelos, that is "rocks"), a small, suggestive and picturesque village, born around the end of the eighteenth century around a baglio (typical ancient Sicilian farmhouse) that develops on the site of a previous Arabic farmhouse. Here there are also two towers dating back to the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries.
Furthermore, in the 1970s, during some excavations, an ancient Mesolithic necropolis came to light and in the surrounding area, finds and remains of ancient civilizations were discovered, testifying to the strategic importance of this area. In the site of the ancient Tonnara, among other things, it seems that the mythological city of Cetara rose. Its name was probably due to the large presence of tuna in the waters of the sea in front.
Below, the well-known sea stacks rise imposingly over the sea, in a cove protected by ancient watchtowers: they are rocky masterpieces that stand proud and austere and are covered with vegetation, creating a postcard-like seascape. They are so beautiful that this ancient seaside village has been the set for numerous cinematographic films including "Oceans 12".
It is impossible not to admire all the beaches: Cala delle Mosche, Scoglio del Passero, Mazzo di Sciacca, Guidaloca, up to the Zingaro Reserve.
A stone’s throw away from us: The Zingaro Reserve and Castellammare del Golfo
The Zingaro Reserve is one of the must-sees of your Sicilian stay. An uncontaminated and wild place, a triumph of nature that dominates the 7 km of coast, with glimpses of incomparable beauty. It is impossible not to admire the seabed, still unpolluted, with unique vegetation and a rich fauna made up of fish, octopus, sea urchins, starfish, coral and much more.
Castellammare del Golfo is nearby: its panorama from above is undoubtedly among the best known and most appreciated in the whole of Sicily. Set in a marvelous gulf, at the foot of Mount Inici, an ancient and flourishing commercial port, it takes its name from the well-known Arab castle that stands out on the sea, as a defense of the promontory and the city. Its crystal-clear waters are appreciated every year by thousands of visitors who crowd it ... and they are right to do so.
